What to Expect from Your First Physiotherapy Appointment

If you're preparing for your first physiotherapy appointment at Physio on Patterson, welcome! Whether you're recovering from an injury, managing chronic pain, or working toward better mobility, starting physiotherapy is a positive step toward improving your health and quality of life.

Here’s what you can expect during your first visit with us:

1. Warm Welcome and Paperwork

Before you arrive, you will be sent the details of your appointment (date, time, practitioner name etc) and an onboarding form. This form will ask for some details about your current symptoms or condition as well as some personal details (full name, DOB, preferred phone number, etc).

2. Initial Assessment

Your physiotherapist will start with a comprehensive assessment. This includes:

  • Discussion of your symptoms: We’ll ask about what brought you in—pain, stiffness, weakness, or injury—as well as your health history and lifestyle.

  • Physical examination: This may involve observing your posture, testing range of motion, strength, balance, and functional movements. We tailor this process to your unique needs and comfort level.

Our goal is to understand the root cause of your issue—not just treat the symptoms.

3. Diagnosis and Goal Setting

Based on the assessment, your physio will explain their findings and discuss a potential diagnosis. You'll work together to set realistic, achievable goals, whether that's returning to sport, improving mobility, or simply being able to move more comfortably through your day.

4. Treatment Plan

Treatment may begin in your first session. This could include:

  • Hands-on therapy (manual techniques)

  • Exercise-based rehabilitation

  • Education about your condition and how to manage it at home

  • Advice on posture, movement habits, or activity modifications

You'll receive a clear and personalised treatment plan, outlining how we’ll help you reach your goals and how long it might take.

5. What to Wear and Bring

  • Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose-fitting clothes that allow easy movement. If your issue is in a specific area (like the knee or shoulder), try to wear something that allows us easy access to assess and treat it.

  • Footwear: Supportive shoes are helpful, especially if we’re looking at how you walk or move. If you are presenting with a running-related issue, it would be helpful if you wear the shoes you typically run in.

  • Medical info: Bring any relevant scans, doctor’s notes, or referrals.

6. What Happens Next?

At the end of your session, your physio will recommend next steps. This may include follow-up appointments, home exercises, or further investigations if necessary. We’re here to guide and support you throughout your recovery journey.

Our Commitment at Physio on Patterson

We understand that starting something new can feel uncertain—but our goal is to make your experience as comfortable and helpful as possible. From your first visit, you’ll be treated with professionalism, care, and a commitment to your health and recovery.
